ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents information on persons in custody and persons serving community-based corrections orders under the authority of corrective services agencies. The statistics are derived from information provided to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) from administrative records held by corrective services agencies in each state and territory, and from the Australian Government Attorney-General's Department for details on federal prisoners. Details are provided for each state and territory on: prisoner numbers and imprisonment rates by type of custody; prisoner numbers by legal status for all prisoners and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners; the number of sentenced receptions into custody; the number of federal prisoners; the numbers and rates of persons serving community-based corrections orders; and data on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status of persons in community-based corrections.

The ABS acknowledges the valuable contribution of the Board of Management and the Advisory Group of the National Corrective Services Statistics Unit as well as the staff of the various agencies that provide the statistics that are presented in this publication.


FORTHCOMING CHANGES

The rates per 100,000 adult population presented in this issue have been calculated using estimated resident population (ERP) counts based on the 2006 Census of Population and Housing (except Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rates).

The rates for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult population are calculated using estimates from the Experimental Estimates and Projections, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 1991 to 2021 (cat. no. 3238.0) also based on data from the 2006 Census of Population and Housing.

New population estimates were released on 20 June 2013 in Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0) and on 30 August 2013 in Estimates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, June 2011 (cat. no. 3238.0). From the September quarter 2013 issue, estimates of rates will be calculated using these latest ERP numbers.


REVISIONS TO WESTERN AUSTRALIA DATA

As advised in the March 2013 quarter of this publication, Western Australia data has been revised for the number of persons serving fine option orders for the period January 2011 to March 2013. As a result of the changes to the fine options data there have been revisions to the data for a number of the community-based corrections order types (Restricted Movement, Fine Option, Community Service and Sentence Probation) for this time period. The revisions affect numbers and rates for Western Australia and the Australian total in Tables 1, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21.
